Mazingira Clubs
Mazingira Clubs is a MESO
initiative that focuses on disseminating information regarding
environmental, socio-cultural and other development issues throughout
Tanzania, Africa and the world. This objective is accomplished by
establishing resource centers, hosting training and community education
events, and promoting multimedia outreach efforts. Such activities
organized by Mazingira Clubs are intended to increase awareness and
participation within communities, to foster socially and politically
accountable governance, and to facilitate poverty alleviation programs
and activities.
Expected Outputs

Establishing and upgrading information and documentation
centers so as to increase public awareness on issues regarding the
environment and sustainable development. |

Establishing and supporting environmental clubs in
schools, colleges and community groups. |
 |
Capacity building for community members in relation to
poverty alleviation, good governance and sound environmental planning
through seminars, training workshops and sight-seeing/study tours to
different sights in Arusha and other regions of Tanzania. |

Hosting educational entertainment events to promote
environmental awareness and civic education activities. For example,
using art groups to perform musical concerts and/or ngoma (drama) shows. |
Accomplishments to Date

Established Mbulumbulu Information and Documentation
Center at the Karatu branch office (1997), which includes a collection
of more than 2000 different resources. |

Initiated environmental and social clubs in schools in
Karatu and Arusha. |
 |
Developed a section in the Arusha head office with visual
presentations concerning environmental awareness locally and around the
world, books, periodicals and research documents. |
 |
Hosted more than 50 seminars and training workshops for
different target groups and members. |
 |
Organized and facilitated projects undertaken by
international students, scientists and volunteers while in Tanzania. A
few examples of past groups include: Wildlife Conservation Society
(WCS), USA; School for International Training (SIT), USA; Global Service
Corps, USA; University of Wales, UK; Peace Corps, USA; InWENT, Germany;
and the South African Development Community (SADC).
